Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust

WWT Washington Wetland Centre, located in Washington, Tyne and Wear, is a vital wetland reserve managed by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. Established in 1975, it features diverse habitats including saline lagoons and dragonfly ponds, supporting a variety of wildlife such as swans, geese, ducks, and even a family of Asian short-clawed otters. The reserve is dedicated to wetland conservation and offers facilities like hides for wildlife observation and a nature-based play area for visitors. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a range of species throughout the year, with peak sightings occurring in December. Notable birds include the Mallard, Teal, and Eurasian Bullfinch, all of which are best observed around midnight. January is an excellent time to spot Grey Herons and Shelducks, while March brings the Tufted Duck into focus. The reserve offers unique opportunities for close encounters with birds, making it a fantastic destination for nature lovers.
