WWT Martin Mere

WWT Martin Mere is a significant wetland nature reserve located in Tarlscough, Burscough, Lancashire, on the West Lancashire Coastal Plain. Managed by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, it is designated as an SSSI, SPA, and Ramsar Site. The reserve features a large mere surrounded by observation hides and various habitats for birds from around the globe, making it a vital location for biodiversity and conservation efforts. The reserve is particularly vibrant in winter, attracting large flocks of whooper swans, pink-footed geese, and Eurasian wigeon. Notable sightings include the snow goose, especially in October, and various birds of prey such as hen harrier and peregrine. For the best viewing experience, visit around 15:00 for whooper swans, or explore in February when species like common buzzard and kestrel peak in activity.
