Woodhouse Washlands is a diverse nature reserve located on the boundary between Sheffield and Rotherham, covering 53 hectares of wet and dry grasslands, swamp, ponds, and scrub. This area, which once featured extensive marshland along the River Rother, now serves as a vital floodplain grazing marsh. Despite its suburban surroundings, the reserve boasts a rich history and is a designated site for nature conservation. Visitors to Woodhouse Washlands can expect to see a variety of wildlife throughout the year. Notable sightings include swallows, swifts, and martins in summer, while spring and early summer are ideal for observing breeding skylarks. The best times for birdwatching are in May, particularly around 1:00 AM, when species like magpies and house martins are most active. Additionally, look out for winter aconite and goldfinches in February, as well as the colourful 7-spot ladybird in March.
