West Dean Woods Nature Reserve features traditional hazel coppice woodland interspersed with oak standards, showcasing historical woodland management practices. This working woodland, located on a private estate, has been coppiced for centuries, with a seven-year cycle ensuring sustainable growth. Access is limited to those involved in coppicing or scientific research, preserving the area's unique character and ecological significance. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for species such as the Hawfinch and Eurasian Goshawk, which peak in January around 10:00 AM. February is an excellent time to spot Red Kites and Robins, while March brings the blooming of Wood Anemones and sightings of Herb-Robert. For those keen on winter visits, December offers chances to see Merlins and Brambling, particularly at dawn and around 10:00 AM, respectively.
