Vau du Saou Reserve is a unique coastal site located on Alderney, featuring a diverse range of habitats including rocky shorelines, cliff-top valleys, and historic farmland. Spanning seven hectares, it is the island's only coastal woodland valley, characterized by deciduous native trees, conifers, and areas of heather and scrubland. The reserve is home to the Wildlife Bunker, a historical interpretation centre housed in a converted World War Two German bunker, which provides insights into the island's military and wildlife history. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to observing a variety of species, particularly during June when activity peaks for several beetles, including the Summer Chafer and Common Cockchafer. Notable sightings also include Slow-worms in August and Yarrow Broomrape in May. The best time for viewing these species is around 01:00, making early morning visits particularly rewarding. The reserve's fixed trails offer a scenic walking experience, although some sections can be steep and challenging.
