Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve, a pioneering 73-hectare site located just north of Sevenoaks, is notable for being the first gravel pit developed for nature conservation. Owned by Tarmac and leased to Kent Wildlife Trust, the reserve features five lakes, woodland, grassland, and reedbeds, creating a rich habitat for a diverse array of wildlife, including over two thousand identified species. The clear waters of the River Darent flow through the northern part, supporting various invertebrates and fish, while the reserve is particularly renowned for its birdlife. Visitors can expect to see a variety of species throughout the year, with peak sightings occurring in February, especially around midnight. Look out for wintering wildfowl, including Eurasian Coot and hybrid geese, and enjoy the vibrant summer activity of reed bunting and reed warbler in the reedbeds. Notable sightings include the Common Bluebottle in March and the Mandarin Duck in September, making these months particularly rewarding for wildlife enthusiasts.
