Plains and Great Bay
UK Wildlife Trusts
Great Bay on St Martin's in the Isles of Scilly is a stunning coastal reserve featuring a diverse dune system shaped by natural protection from prevailing winds. This area showcases a remarkable progression of vegetation communities, including sea sandwort, frosted orache, and marram grass, transitioning to rich dune grassland and heathland dominated by heather and gorse. The reserve's unique habitats contribute to its ecological significance and beauty. Visitors can expect to see a variety of wildlife, particularly during the peak months of April and October. Notable sightings include the Spotted Flycatcher and Common Redstart in October, best observed around 10:00 and 11:00 respectively. Spring brings opportunities to spot European Shags and Sandwich Terns at dusk, while the vibrant insect life in summer makes it a great time for butterfly enthusiasts.
