Peninnis Head is a striking headland located on the southern edge of St Mary’s, featuring prominent granite cliffs, tors, and boulders amidst maritime heathland and grassland. This SSSI is known for its rare plant and lichen species, as well as its diverse habitats, which include species-rich maritime grassland. The area is actively managed with grazing to promote wildflower growth and control invasive species, creating a unique and vibrant ecosystem. The best time to visit Peninnis Head for wildlife observation is October, when migratory birds are abundant. Look out for species such as the shag, rock pipit, and wryneck, with peak activity occurring around 11:00. Additionally, the area is a prime location for spotting humpback and fin whales in winter, alongside pods of common dolphins. The varied habitats provide opportunities to see a range of birds and marine life throughout the year.
