Old Lodge Nature Reserve, located in the heart of Ashdown Forest near Maresfield in East Sussex, features open vistas of heather interspersed with areas of pine woodland. Sitting approximately 500 feet higher than surrounding areas, it offers a cooler climate and a unique character distinct from other lowland heaths. The reserve is free to visit, although parking charges now apply in the car park managed by the Conservators of Ashdown Forest. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to a variety of species, particularly in April when activity peaks. Notable sightings include the Wren, Dartford Warbler, and Kestrel, all best observed around 1:00 AM. Other highlights include the Nightjar in July and Blue Tit in March, making Old Lodge a rewarding destination for birdwatchers throughout the year.
