Lydden Temple Ewell - The James Teacher Reserve features sweeping downland slopes rich in biodiversity, located on the outskirts of Dover, Kent. This reserve is open at all times and is known for its vibrant grassland flowers, including orchids, and the presence of grazing cattle. Volunteer work parties help manage the habitat, which may occasionally create noise, so visitors might prefer quieter days for their visit. The best time to visit is from May to August, when the reserve is alive with butterflies, including the Meadow Brown and Small White, which peak in June and April, respectively. Look out for over 20 butterfly species, as well as the rare Tiree Twist moth, rediscovered in 2025. Birdwatchers may spot the Common Buzzard in January, particularly at dusk, while the Yellowhammer and Jackdaw are best seen in May. For a chance to observe the Wart-biter Cricket, patience is key amidst the symphony of crickets and grasshoppers.
