Lower Moors is a stunning wetland located between Hugh Town and Old Town Bay on St Mary's, the largest island in the Isles of Scilly. This diverse habitat features mire, reedbed, wet woodland, and open pools, making it a vital Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) since 1971. Managed by the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust, the area is part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and plays a crucial role in the archipelago's water supply and flood protection. Birdwatchers will find Lower Moors particularly rewarding, especially in October when species such as the Wryneck, European Pied Flycatcher, and Yellow-browed Warbler peak in sightings. The best times to observe these birds are around 11:00 for Wryneck and European Pied Flycatcher, and at dawn for the Yellow-browed Warbler. Additionally, the area is frequented by Jack Snipe and various warblers, making it an ideal spot for both migrating and overwintering birds.
