Longis Reserve is the largest terrestrial reserve on Alderney, encompassing about one-eighth of the island and featuring 13 distinct habitats, including marine, inter-tidal, coastal heathland, scrub woodland, and freshwater ponds. Designated as a wildlife refuge under a memorandum of understanding in 2003, it is home to over 100 species of national importance. The reserve offers accessible bird hides overlooking freshwater ponds, providing opportunities to observe a diverse range of wildlife. Visitors can expect to see a variety of flora and fauna, particularly during the peak month of June when species such as the Green-winged Orchid, Pyramidal Orchid, and Viper's-bugloss are most abundant. Notable sightings include the nationally rare Glanville Fritillary in late May and June. Early morning visits around 01:00 are ideal for spotting active species, including the Common Cockchafer in May and various orchids and insects in June, making it a vibrant time for wildlife enthusiasts.
