Llanmerewig Glebe is a small yet remarkable nature reserve spanning just one hectare. This site is particularly known for its thriving population of the highly poisonous Autumn Crocus (Colchicum autumnale), also referred to as Meadow Saffron or ‘Naked Ladies’. The reserve benefits from traditional hay management, allowing this delicate flower to flourish, and it has been noted in Richard Mabey’s ‘Flora Britannica’ for its exceptional abundance. While the Autumn Crocus is the standout species, visitors can also look for a variety of wildlife throughout the year. Notable sightings include Woodpigeons in January and various bees in March, while the Autumn Crocus typically blooms from late August to early October. For those interested in seasonal highlights, the best time to observe the Autumn Crocus is in September, making it an ideal period for a visit.
