Leythorne Meadow Nature Reserve
UK Wildlife Trusts
Leythorne Meadow Nature Reserve, located just south of Chichester, is a charming wet meadow featuring a mix of rare calcareous fen meadow, old watercress beds, and pasture. The reserve is managed through traditional practices, including hand-cutting and raking of fen vegetation in summer, followed by autumn grazing. This careful stewardship enhances the biodiversity of the area, making it a valuable habitat for various species. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to a variety of species throughout the year, with notable sightings including Black Swans peaking in March and Greylag Geese in January. The best times for observation are around 1:00 AM, particularly in January when activity is highest. Other species such as Blackbirds and Woodpigeons peak in April, while Western House-Martins can be spotted in September, providing a diverse experience for visitors across the seasons.
