Kilnhurst Ings is a transformed post-industrial washland located on the River Don, offering a diverse mosaic of habitats including grassland, scrub, hedgerows, and mature trees. This nature reserve is part of the Living Don initiative, aimed at enhancing the River Don catchment and promoting wetland habitats while reducing flood risks. It features a variety of wildlife-friendly elements, such as drains and ditches, which support a rich array of species. Visitors can expect to see a range of birds, with notable sightings of magpies peaking in May, particularly around 1:00 AM. Other highlights include kingfishers in February and goldfinches also noted in that month. The reserve is alive with butterflies like the 7-spot ladybird in March, while winter visitors such as fieldfare and redwing can be spotted during the colder months. For a vibrant experience, May is the best month for wildlife activity.
