Iping and Stedham Commons Nature Reserve is a stunning example of lowland heathland located just west of Midhurst in Sussex. Spanning 125 hectares, this reserve is primarily owned by Sussex Wildlife Trust and includes Trotton Common and Bridgelands Plantation. As one of the best-preserved heathland habitats in the UK, it offers a rich atmosphere and diverse wildlife, making it a vital area for conservation, especially as over 80% of lowland heath has been lost in recent centuries. Visitors can expect to see a variety of wildlife, particularly during peak months such as June, when species like the Silver-studded Blue butterfly and Stonechat are most active. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for the Common Buzzard and Goldfinch, which peak in September and July, respectively. The best time for wildlife observation is around 01:00, when many species are most active, providing excellent opportunities for sightings throughout the warmer months.
