Henllys Bog is a small yet significant valley mire located in South Wales, surrounded by alder and beech trees. This tranquil reserve is one of the finest examples of its kind in the region and has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The unique habitat features waterlogged valley bottoms where peat has accumulated, making it a rare ecological treasure in Britain, particularly due to past drainage and grazing pressures. Visitors to Henllys Bog can expect to see a variety of wildlife, particularly in January when bird activity peaks. Look for coots, cormorants, and little grebes, with the best observation times around midnight. The summer months also bring meadow pipits and butterflies, while the blooming wildflowers attract various insects. For a chance to see the marsh helleborine and fragrant orchids, summer is the ideal season to explore this vibrant habitat.
