Gravel Hole is a unique nature reserve situated in a former sand and gravel quarry, now thriving with lime-loving plants. This habitat features a rich array of flora, including orchids, cowslips, kidney vetch, and greater knapweed, alongside a variety of sedges and grasses. The reserve is characterized by its gently sloping terrain and unsurfaced paths, making it accessible only on foot. While there is no dedicated parking, on-street parking is available nearby. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to spotting a diverse range of species at Gravel Hole, particularly in February when activity peaks for several insects, including the Harlequin Ladybird and Eristalis tenax. September is another notable month for sightings, with jackdaws and hairy shieldbugs making appearances. Visitors are encouraged to keep an eye out for butterflies, with 12 species recorded, including the dingy skipper and common blue, making this reserve an engaging destination for nature lovers throughout the year.
