Gorse Farm is a compact nature reserve featuring a pond and marshy grassland, providing a rich habitat for a diverse range of wildlife. Notable for its over seventy species of aquatic insects, including the water beetle Cerycon ustulatus, the reserve is also home to the legally protected great crested newt. The vibrant wet grassland showcases plants like ragged robin and meadowsweet, particularly flourishing in the summer months. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see various bird species, with peak sightings of Tufted Ducks in July around dusk and Mute Swans in January at midnight. Spring is particularly rewarding, as April brings Red Kites and Eurasian Moorhens, best observed in the late afternoon and at dusk, respectively. March is the standout month for activity, featuring sightings of Great Crested Grebes, Marsh Tits, and Common Toads, all best observed around midnight.
