Gilfach is a stunning nature reserve located in the Marteg Valley of rural Mid Wales, formerly an old hill farm. Spanning 130 hectares, it is home to 20 Luing cattle that graze the land, helping to maintain the diverse habitats that support a rich array of wildlife. The reserve features way-marked trails for visitors to explore while minimizing their impact, and it is known for its impressive variety of lichens, wildflowers, and vibrant landscapes. Wildlife enthusiasts will find Gilfach particularly rewarding in May, when species such as redstarts, nuthatches, and tree pipits are most active, with peak observation times around dawn and early afternoon. The reserve is also home to over seventy bird species, including the white-throated dipper, which peaks in July. Visitors can enjoy the colourful display of bell heather and gorse in late summer, attracting butterflies and other insects, making it a vibrant spot for nature lovers throughout the seasons.
