Fontmell Down is an internationally important chalk downland nature reserve located 10 miles north of Blandford, along the B3081. This stunning site features a diverse mix of habitats, including ancient grassland, scrub, and woodland, supporting a rich variety of flora and fauna. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views over the Blackmore Vale while exploring the reserve, which is home to nine species of orchids, the rare early gentian, and 35 butterfly species, making it a vital refuge for wildlife. For butterfly enthusiasts, August is the prime time to visit Fontmell Down, with peak activity around 1:00 PM. Look out for the Meadow Brown, Small Heath, and Gatekeeper, which are among the most frequently observed species. Other notable butterflies include the Common Blue and Brimstone, with sightings peaking in late spring and summer months. The reserve's rich biodiversity also includes rare birds, mammals, and a variety of insects, making it a vibrant destination for nature lovers year-round.
