Filsham Reedbed Nature Reserve, located in the Combe Haven Valley between Bexhill and Hastings, is one of Sussex's largest reedbeds. This Local Nature Reserve features a diverse array of wetland habitats, including ditches, lagoons, grazing marsh, and ancient woodlands, making it a vital resource for water management and biodiversity. Designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, it supports a rich variety of plant, invertebrate, and bird life, with ongoing management by Sussex Wildlife Trust since the 1970s. Birdwatchers will find Filsham particularly rewarding, especially in April when species like the Mallard, Grey Heron, Cetti's Warbler, and Green Sandpiper peak in activity around 1:00 AM. Other notable sightings include the Fulvous Whistling-Duck in December, best observed at dawn, and the Common Snipe in February, peaking around 3:00 PM. With its varied habitats, the reserve is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts throughout the year, offering unique opportunities to observe diverse species in their natural environment.
