Dixton Embankment is a unique grassland reserve located between the River Wye and the A40, managed by Gwent Wildlife Trust. This site features a diverse range of limestone-loving species, thriving in the substrate created during the embankment's construction. The upper banks, adorned with woodland and scrub, provide habitat for various mammals, birds, and basking reptiles, while the vibrant wildflower displays in spring and summer attract a wealth of insects, including numerous orchids. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for a variety of species throughout the year, with peak observations occurring in April. Notable sightings include Canada Geese and Goldfinches, best observed around 1:00 AM. Additionally, Great Spotted Woodpeckers and Blackcaps also peak in April, while Greater Horseshoe Bats are best seen in July. The reserve is particularly lively during these months, making it an excellent time for visitors to experience its rich biodiversity.
