Dimminsdale is a 37-hectare geological and biological Site of Special Scientific Interest located east of Calke in Derbyshire, extending into Leicestershire. This reserve features semi-natural woodland and one of the largest areas of unimproved acidic grassland in the county, supporting a diverse range of habitats. Managed by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust and owned by Severn Trent Water, Dimminsdale also has a rich industrial heritage, with remnants of historical lead mining adding to its unique character. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to a variety of species throughout the year, with January being the best month for sightings. Notable species include the Jackdaw and Marsh Tit, both peaking in January, often spotted around midnight. Visitors may also encounter Tufted Ducks in December and Lesser Black-backed Gulls in May. The reserve's mixed woodland is ideal for birdwatching, and in late winter to early spring, the stunning display of snowdrops offers a beautiful backdrop for wildlife observation.
