Cutacre is a transformed species-rich meadow located in Wigan, where wading birds and protected pondlife flourish. Once overgrazed, this reserve now features a sustainable grazing herd of rare-breed longhorn cattle, creating ideal conditions for farmland birds. Notable species such as lapwings, oystercatchers, and redshanks breed here, while the vibrant flora supports a diverse range of wildlife, including rare willow tits and various amphibians. For wildlife enthusiasts, March is the prime month to visit Cutacre, with peak activity around midday. Look out for willow tits and garganey, both of which have notable sightings during this time. Other highlights include the chance to see Eurasian bullfinches and gray partridges, particularly at dusk in March. The reserve is also home to skylarks and meadow pipits, adding to the rich tapestry of birdlife that can be enjoyed throughout the spring and summer months.
