Cromford Canal SSSI, located in Derbyshire, is a significant wetland area stretching from Cromford Wharf to Ambergate. Once a working waterway until 1944, this section is now designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Local Nature Reserve. The diverse habitats along the canal include pond weeds, bankside plants like water mint and meadowsweet, and various meadow and woodland species, making it crucial for local biodiversity. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of species throughout the year, with peak activity in April when Orange-tips and Smooth Newts are most frequently observed. The canal is home to water birds such as ducks and moorhens, with sightings of the White-throated Dipper peaking in December. For those interested in reptiles, the elusive grass snake can be spotted, though patience is required. The best times for observing wildlife vary, with early morning hours often yielding the most sightings.
