Crich Chase Meadows Nature Reserve, located at the southern end of the Crich Chase site, is an extension of the Crich Chase Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This herb-rich lowland meadow and lowland dry acid grassland, managed through cattle grazing, is complemented by the adjacent ancient woodland of Smith’s Rough. The absence of fertilisers has fostered a diverse ecosystem, rich in plants and fungi that support a variety of wildlife. For wildlife enthusiasts, the best time to visit is during spring when the meadows burst with flowers like birdsfoot trefoil and the woodland floor is adorned with bluebells. Notable sightings include Mallards and Greylag Geese peaking in January, while Buzzards are spotted in November. In summer, look for butterflies such as the Red Admiral and Speckled Wood, with fungi making an appearance in autumn. The rich biodiversity makes Crich Chase Meadows a vibrant destination throughout the seasons.
