Cop Lane is a vibrant nature reserve located near Preston, formerly a railway line from Preston to Southport. This area has transformed into a wildflower haven, where a rich variety of flora and fauna flourish. The reserve features diverse habitats, including wetter areas that support species like ragged robin and angelica, while drier sections are home to oxeye daisies and bird’s-foot trefoil. The management of Cop Lane has successfully encouraged the growth of five orchid species, making it a notable site for wildflowers and wildlife. Visitors to Cop Lane can expect to see a range of wildlife throughout the year, with January being the peak month for sightings. Notable species include the tawny owl and woodcock, both best observed around midnight. In spring, look for hawthorn shieldbugs and wood anemones, while autumn brings black-headed gulls and chicory. The reserve's diverse plant life attracts various butterflies, making it a delightful spot for nature enthusiasts.
