Cockaynes Wood Nature Reserve features a diverse landscape of mature woodlands, heathland, and wetlands, located along the Sixpenny Brook. The reserve includes ancient woodland primarily composed of Chestnut, Oak, and Hazel, alongside a recently restored gravel pit. Visitors can enjoy the vibrant spring wildflowers, including Bluebells and Wood Anemone, and the stunning autumn foliage. The area is also characterized by gentle inclines and a partial boardwalk, making it accessible for walkers. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to a variety of species throughout the year. January is particularly active, with sightings of Mute Swans, Brambling, and Avocets peaking during this month. Spring brings the enchanting calls of Nightingales and the sight of Lapwings around the ponds, while summer offers opportunities to spot dragonflies and Glow Worms. Keep an eye out for butterflies like the White Admiral and Green Hairstreak, as well as the occasional Turtle Dove in the open habitats.
