Coatham Marsh SSSI is a remarkable nature reserve located in Teesside, characterised by its diverse habitats of reedbeds, open water pools, and expansive grasslands. This site is particularly significant for its rich biodiversity, attracting numerous waders and waterfowl. The landscape features mounds from its industrial heritage, offering stunning views over the marsh and the surrounding area of Redcar. Access is available via a mix of surfaced and unsurfaced paths, with free parking at the nearby Tod Point car park. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of species throughout the year, with notable peaks in sightings during specific months. March is particularly vibrant, showcasing species like the King Eider and Common Eider, best observed around 10:00 and 16:00 respectively. February also brings a flurry of activity, with Blackbirds and Velvet Scoters peaking at midnight and 11:00. For those interested in winter visitors, January offers opportunities to spot Turnstones and Sanderlings, especially at dusk.
