Clifford Common is a diverse riverside habitat that transitions into scrub and woodland, located along an old tramway route near Hay-on-Wye. This grassland reserve is notable for its potential as an otter refuge and features four main habitats: a river teeming with invertebrates, a tree-lined bank, a floodplain with damp-loving plants, and mixed deciduous woodland. The historical tramway adds a unique character to the reserve, enhancing its natural beauty. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to spotting a variety of species, particularly in May when activity peaks. Notable sightings include the Red Kite, which is best observed around 1:00 AM, and other species like the American Mink in April and Cormorants in November. Summer months also bring butterflies such as comma and common blue, which can be seen in the warm glades.
