Clawthorpe Fell is a remarkable National Nature Reserve located near Burton-in-Kendal, Cumbria. This area showcases stunning limestone pavement, a habitat that supports a diverse range of wildlife and geological features. The reserve consists of two sections: the accessible mainland, which has been quarried, and a closed island that preserves intact limestone pavement. Managed by Cumbria Wildlife Trust since 2021, Clawthorpe Fell is part of a larger limestone habitat that includes neighbouring reserves like Holme Park Quarry and Hutton Roof Crags. Visitors can look for a variety of wildlife throughout the year, with notable sightings including the Redpoll in June and the Tree Pipit in March. Spring and summer are particularly vibrant, with butterflies such as the Small Tortoiseshell appearing in May. For those interested in mosses, December is the peak month for several species, including Chalk Comb-moss and Slender Ditrichum, with the best observation times around midnight. Keep an ear out for the calls of willow warblers and the sight of peregrines soaring overhead during your visit.
