Chudleigh Knighton Heath, located near Chudleigh Knighton in Devon, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest known for its rare lowland heath vegetation. This nature reserve features a mosaic of gorse, heather, and grassland, serving as a vital habitat for unique wildlife, including the rare ant, Formica exsecta. The area is accessible via the Ant Trail from the village and is linked to other reserves through the Bovey Basin Wild Walk. Wildlife enthusiasts can look out for a variety of species, particularly in May when activity peaks. Notable sightings include the Tree Pipit and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, both best observed around 16:00. The reserve is also home to breeding dragonflies, including the scarce Keeled Skimmer. For those interested in birdwatching, dusk is an excellent time to spot the European Stonechat and Redpoll in April, while the Common Raven can be seen in December.
