Chopwell East Fields is a Local Wildlife Site located between the village of Chopwell and the adjacent Chopwell Woods. This area features a mosaic of habitats, including lowland meadows and pasture restored from former colliery works. The site is particularly valuable for its diverse foraging and nesting habitats, supporting a variety of species. The management by Durham Wildlife Trust ensures the maintenance of these grasslands through grazing and mowing, promoting biodiversity. Visitors to Chopwell East Fields can expect to see a range of bird species throughout the year, with notable peaks in activity. February is particularly vibrant, showcasing House Sparrows and Robins, while Goldfinches and Greenfinches are best observed in September. The early morning hours around 01:00 are ideal for spotting Woodpigeons and Blackbirds, making this a great time for birdwatching. The diverse flora, including meadowsweet and cuckooflower, adds to the reserve's charm, especially in the wetter areas.
