Chapel Down, located at the eastern end of St Martin's in the Isles of Scilly, showcases one of the finest examples of 'waved' maritime heathland. This reserve features steep granite cliffs that provide nesting sites for seabirds such as Manx shearwaters and lesser black-backed gulls. The area is rich in biodiversity, hosting rare maritime lichens and nationally significant species like the orange bird’s-foot and red-barbed ants, making it a vital ecological site. For wildlife enthusiasts, October is the prime month to visit, with notable sightings including Spotted Flycatchers and Common Rosefinches peaking around 10:00 AM. April also offers exciting opportunities to observe Shags and Sandwich Terns, particularly at dusk. Visitors can enjoy the vibrant spring atmosphere, with the sounds of stonechats and the scent of gorse enhancing the experience.
