Chance Wood is a small plantation woodland located on a hillside overlooking the River Stour. Established in the 19th century, it features a mix of large oaks, beech, hornbeam, ash, and sycamore, alongside carpets of spring flowers such as snowdrops, daffodils, and bluebells. The reserve also includes glades of bracken and bramble, with a dry valley running through it, creating a diverse habitat for various species. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for a variety of birds, including nuthatches and woodland species like tits and woodpeckers. Notable sightings include the hobby, which peaks in September, and the long-tailed tit in October. January is a particularly active month for species such as the grey heron and Canada goose, making it an excellent time for visitors to explore the reserve and enjoy its rich biodiversity.
