Centenary Riverside is a 4.5 hectare wetland reserve located alongside the River Don, featuring a vibrant wildflower meadow and a network of ponds and wetlands. This transformed site, once home to a large steel foundry, is now a haven for wildlife, including a rich variety of birds, mammals, and insects. The reserve plays a crucial role in Rotherham’s flood alleviation scheme while also preserving elements of its industrial heritage, such as ‘Steel Henge’ and concrete foundations that provide habitat for species like kingfishers. Visitors can expect to see sand martins darting around in the summer, with peak sightings occurring in August. Other notable species include woodpigeons in January and cormorants in December. The best times for observing various wildlife are typically around 01:00, especially in the summer months when butterflies like the ringlet and meadow brown are active. For a diverse wildlife experience, visiting during peak months such as May and August is highly recommended.
