Castern Wood is a nature reserve managed by the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, located on the eastern slopes of the Manifold Valley, approximately one mile south of Wetton. This ancient woodland features a mix of broadleaf trees, scrub, and grassland, with limestone-rich soils supporting over 240 plant species. The reserve is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation, making it a vital area for biodiversity. Spring is an excellent time to visit Castern Wood, as early flowering cowslips and violets emerge, while March also sees activity from species like the Sparrowhawk and Great Spotted Woodpecker. In summer, the reserve is vibrant with wild thyme and rockrose, attracting numerous butterflies. Notable wildlife sightings peak in March, making it a prime time for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike.
