Carr Vale is a wetland reserve located in Derbyshire, characterized by a diverse habitat that includes open water, marsh, wet and dry grassland, scrub, and trees. This area is particularly noted for its birdwatching opportunities, attracting a rich variety of avian species throughout the year. The reserve is accessible only via concessionary paths to minimize disturbance, ensuring a tranquil environment for wildlife and visitors alike. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see large flocks of wildfowl in winter, including wigeon and teal, while spring and autumn are prime times for migratory birds. Notable sightings include willow tits peaking in January and swallows roosting in September, sometimes numbering up to 2,000. Other species such as moorhen and jack snipe are best observed in February, while various butterflies like the speckled wood and small white are prominent in September. The best time for overall activity is around 1:00 PM, particularly in January.
