Butterburn Flow is a wild and remote blanket bog located on the Cumbria-Northumberland border, part of the larger Border Mires. This unique habitat is characterized by its high water table and rich biodiversity, including notable species such as cloudberry, great sundew, and bog rosemary. The area is relatively intact due to minimal artificial drainage, making it a vital ecosystem managed by Northumberland Wildlife Trust and owned by the Forestry Commission. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to fascinating bog plants like bog asphodel, cranberry, and cottongrass. In spring, visitors can experience the haunting calls of curlews, while summer brings the striking white flowers of cloudberry, typically found at higher altitudes. Although specific sightings data is sparse, the diverse flora and the evocative sounds of the bog create a captivating experience throughout the seasons.
