Burton and Chingford Ponds Nature Reserve is a diverse habitat located just three miles south of Petworth, featuring woodlands, carr, wet and dry heath, and two large ponds. This tranquil site, managed by Sussex Wildlife Trust and West Sussex County Council, offers visitors a unique glimpse into various ecosystems, including a historic 16th-century hammer pond where fishing is a popular activity. The reserve is free to visit and relies on support from its members for maintenance and conservation efforts. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of species, particularly in January when activity peaks around 15:00. Look out for the Common Kingfisher and Western Cattle-Egret, both of which are frequently spotted during this time. Other notable sightings include the Eurasian Goshawk and Water Rail, which are best observed in December. May is also a good month for spotting Tufted Ducks and Wrens, with their peak activity occurring around 01:00.
