Burham Down is a stunning 110-hectare nature reserve located between Maidstone and Chatham in Kent. Managed by the Kent Wildlife Trust, it features a mix of chalk grassland and extensive woodland. The reserve is part of the Wouldham to Detling Escarpment Site of Special Scientific Interest and is included in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, making it a significant area for conservation and biodiversity. Visitors can expect to see a variety of butterflies, particularly in August when species like the Meadow Brown, Gatekeeper, and Common Blue are most active. The best time for sightings is around 01:00, when these butterflies are at their peak. Additionally, look out for orchids in the woodland and kestrels nesting in the chalk cliffs, adding to the reserve's rich wildlife experience.
