Brown End Quarry is a striking former limestone quarry located near Waterhouses in Staffordshire, England. Designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, it showcases unique geological features, including finely grained Milldale limestone formed over 350 million years ago. The reserve has transformed since quarrying ceased in the mid-1960s, allowing a rich limestone grassland flora to flourish alongside dramatic rock formations, making it a fascinating site for both geology enthusiasts and nature lovers. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for species such as the Field Vole, which peaks in December, particularly around midnight. The Song Thrush is another notable visitor, with activity peaking in April. Mid-summer is an excellent time to visit for vibrant wildflowers and a variety of butterflies, while spring brings the bright yellow cowslips. The reserve offers a unique opportunity to connect with both its geological history and diverse wildlife.
