Brockholes Wood, located in the far north of Derbyshire, features a mix of moorland and remnants of sessile oak woodland, alongside hairy birch and rowan. This nature reserve, which is recommended for visitors with reasonable mobility due to its steep slope and rough paths, offers a unique habitat that supports various bird species and typical moorland plants like heather and bilberry. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of birds, particularly in June when activity peaks at dusk around 20:00. Look for redpolls, common sandpipers, and meadow pipits during this time. Autumn is also a great season for spotting mistle thrushes, blackbirds, and fieldfares, while October is ideal for observing red grouse at dawn.
