Brockholes Nature Reserve, located near Preston, Lancashire, is a unique habitat created from a former sand and gravel quarry. Owned by the Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside, this 250-acre reserve features a mosaic of pools, reedbeds, and woodlands, alongside the UK's first floating visitor village. Opened to the public in 2011, Brockholes aims to engage the general public with its diverse wildlife and community-focused projects. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of species throughout the year. Notable sightings include breeding wading birds such as redshank in April, with peak activity around 1:00 AM. Ospreys can be spotted in August, particularly around 4:00 PM, while common goldeneye and tufted ducks are best observed in March. Roe deer are often seen in November, and the elusive bittern may be spotted during winter months. The reserve is alive with insect activity in spring and summer, making it a vibrant destination for nature lovers.
