Broadwater Lake SSSI
UK Wildlife Trusts
Broadwater Lake SSSI is a significant wetland reserve located in the Mid Colne Valley, recognised for its rich biodiversity and designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. This expansive lake, along with Korda Lake and Long Pond, provides vital habitat for a variety of waterbirds and wildlife. Currently, public access is restricted due to HS2 construction works, which are expected to last around seven years, posing a potential threat from proposed watersports developments. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to spotting a range of species, particularly in winter when birds like Goldeneye, Smew, and Pochard are present. January is the best month for sightings, with peak activity occurring around midday. Other notable species include Red Kite and Red-necked Grebe, which are best observed in February and January, respectively. While access is limited, the reserve remains a crucial habitat for many migratory and resident birds.
