Broadhurst Edge Wood is a 14-acre reserve located in the north of the county, situated at just over 900 ft. This exposed woodland, primarily composed of oak and birch, serves as a vital habitat for a diverse range of wildlife, particularly birds. With 64 recorded bird species, including notable breeders like kestrel, tawny owl, and redpoll, the reserve is a designated area of ecological importance, offering a refuge in an otherwise sparse woodland landscape. Visitors can enjoy birdwatching year-round, with peak activity in July, particularly around dusk at approximately 17:00. Notable sightings include the Mandarin Duck and White-throated Dipper, with the latter peaking in February around 16:00. The reserve also supports overwintering species like woodcock and provides habitat for various mammals, including brown hare and hedgehog, making it an engaging destination for wildlife enthusiasts throughout the seasons.
