Briarwood Banks is a semi-natural ancient woodland Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) located in north Northumberland. This reserve features a diverse habitat primarily dominated by ash, with oak and birch also present. It is renowned for its rich flora, including rare species such as bird's-nest orchid and wood fescue, alongside a variety of ancient woodland indicator lichens. The site is currently undergoing restoration to enhance conditions for rare species like the dormouse. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for a range of species throughout the year, with notable sightings including skylarks in May and wood warblers in August. November is particularly rewarding, with peak activity for Eurasian tree sparrows and ring-necked pheasants, best observed in the late afternoon and at dusk, respectively. Other highlights include the white-throated dipper in July and the mistle thrush in March, making Briarwood Banks a captivating destination for birdwatching and nature exploration.
