Brandon Hill Nature Reserve is a cherished green oasis in the heart of Bristol, spanning five acres and established over 30 years ago through a partnership between Avon Wildlife Trust and Bristol City Council. This historic site, believed to be the oldest public park in the country, offers stunning views of the city and serves as a vital stopover for migrating birds along the river valley. The reserve features diverse habitats, including woodlands and a wildlife pond, making it a significant area for urban conservation. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of species throughout the year, with January being the peak month for sightings. Look out for Jays, Great Tits, and Jackdaws, particularly active around midnight. In spring, the wildlife pond comes alive with frogspawn, while summer brings butterflies and bees attracted to the blooming cowslips and knapweed. Notable species like the Great Spotted Woodpecker can be spotted in August, and the Robin peaks in May, offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching.
