Bramley Bank is a 10.3-hectare local nature reserve located in Upper Shirley, Croydon. This restored woodland and heathland area showcases London’s semi-natural habitats, featuring oak, ash, and birch trees, alongside relic heathland and acid grassland communities. The reserve is home to the largest woodland pond in Croydon, which supports a diverse range of wildlife, including stag beetles and woodpeckers. Managed by London Wildlife Trust on behalf of Croydon Council since 1986, it offers a tranquil escape for nature enthusiasts. March is the prime time to visit Bramley Bank, with peak wildlife activity occurring at dusk around 19:00. Look out for Eurasian nuthatches, rose-ringed parakeets, and great spotted woodpeckers during this period. The reserve also hosts a variety of butterflies and birds, making it an excellent spot for birdwatching and enjoying the vibrant spring displays of bluebells and violets. For those interested in nocturnal wildlife, stag beetles can be spotted in July during the early hours.
